Yes, to me its more of a metaphor. Obviously we don't have a third eye, but if you research more on the pineal gland, you'll begin to discover that it has similar characteristics as our actually eye. Also I take it has people refer to it as a "Third Eye" Simply because, it's like your seeing into another dimension that you cant see with your regular two eyes only with your "Third Eye(Pineal Gland)" if its open.

There's quite a lot of drugs, mainly psychedelics that can open our third eye.
