i have suggested a 1000w corsair which is always silent even under idleness. if i was a noob i would of suggested an unknown PSU brand that is terrible.

atombomb30000 wrote im not talking about strictly SLI im talking about when the time comes and he may want to change his mind and get a dual sli 780 ti for example hell have it there so he doesnt need to worry about the PSU...the PSU is needed if the user changes their mind about their build and wishes to get higher wattage required parts..im putting it into a perspective of getting an amazing computer now so he doesnt have to ever worry about it and itll last him for ages.
I know... In which case a 750w unit would be plenty and serve the same purpose. There's really not a single good reason a 1000w unit is a good idea.

wouldnt make no diffrence..the GPU needs at least a 600w..if you put that GPU in with a weak PSU your computer can go down the drain easily...the PSU is the most crucial part of a computer.best to have an excellent wattage before you start getting high wattage required componants

and yes root i understand for now but the point im trying to make is...
1-he wants as near as money can make it..eg 1000 dollars.
2-hes not really fluent with building a computer
so technically it would be best to get someone to help him put it together and he doesnt have to worry about the wattage being too low etc etc...hes got the spare watts there whenever he needs it..on top of that ive also suggested things like a quad core extreme i7 which are also wattage bound

Just stop, no. The PSU in which r00t selected is absolutely perfect, it will run everything he has right now and will be great when he upgrades later on. A 1000W PSU will not give him any advantage and he'll be spending money that can be used elsewhere. It scares me to think that you know more than others when you keep thinking that the biggest is the best when clearly that isn't the situation
OP: I'd be careful what build you're going to chose as it seems that others are giving misleading information and not using common sense. If it were me I'd go with r00t's build but that's just because he is amazing at this stuff and has a lot of reputation to go with it.
Best of Luck with the build and hope all goes well

this is a civilised conversation about computer componants..diffrent people have diffrent views upon what they find the ideal computer..the person has suggested they want it nearest to 1000 dollars as possible..and they are also newish to computer building....root has suggested a build with good componants but isnt really secure in some regions such as the PSU ...he could of suggested a higher PSU so that the poster who required the build wouldnt need to worry about running out of wattage and maybe frying their computer...a GPU needs at least 600w...thats just the GPU...the CPU is most probs about...75-100? you also have things on top of that like the fans...disk drives etc.....i know perfectly well what im going on about...you have just come in and looked at a few posts and assumed that im obviously under experienced...sorry sir thats completely un true

That number is geared toward bad PSUs and these aren't bad PSUs. What the system actually draws is what matters.

That's not what I was suggesting. Off-topic, but there are better 1000w units around $200 than the RM1000 like the Cooler Master V1000 and EVGA G2 1000w. The RM series isn't exactly top of the heap, but it's by no means bad (like it was at launch).

There is no such thing as a "quad-core extreme" i7 and since I assume you're talking about a Haswell i7, power consumption is actually pretty low.

That's not how you determine what wattage you need. Just for an example: [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
Their test setup is relaitively similar to what OP would be running and as you can see, overclocked power consumption is under 400w.

thats true but theres a boundary between good and bad PSUs the ones you have listed and mine are top of the range...there are many out there that perform better in diffrent aspects
