Remember, the thermal paste is there to transfer heat where the heatsink dont make direct contact with the CPU [they are not flat at all] so you dont need much.

Already done that, Horizontal grain of rice. Maybe my i5 just can't handle the load?

I use a i5 3340 and it stays below 58c no matter what i do.

Does the CPU cooler have good clearance? Do you get rid of absolutely all paste before you redo it?

(Also, why are you sad about having an i5 4440, better processor will barely affect your framerate - it's a really good processor)

I know CPU's do not affect framerate, it just doesn't have the power for some of the things I do. which is why I plan on either getting a 4670k or a 4770k(i7)

They do help, and an i7 will give you slightly better framerates but for just playing games it's not worth it.

If you're using other programs like you say, of course the i7 will probably help a lot.

By the sounds of it you shouldn't be worrying about it, my old i3 used to get to the same temperature and that pc still works.
