H81 doesn't officially support overclocking however ASUS is rumoured to have released a BIOS update that allows it.

The intel pentium CPU that will be in the PC can overclock with the motherboard that will be in it so there is no need to waste money on the Z87 or 97 as it wouldnt make any difference performance wise
^thats what I was told

Not necessarily. A Z87 or Z97 chipset board will most likely have more features and as far as I'm aware, should be better for overclocking(although I'm not 100% positive). Plus, Z87/Z97 chipset board gives you more upgrade options. Z series board are really cheap for what they offer and to be honest, I'd say it's well worth it.

Remember, No Non-Z Series chipset officially offers overclocking. If you want to rely on ASUS using a workaround you let you overclock on that H81 board then get that one. However H81 has many less features, uses PCIe 2.0 and that H81 board looks poo.
