OP, for recording I have tried many different things. However I have found Mirillis Action to be the best by far. You can get a full version of it for free by searching around.
The file sizes are relatively small and the interface and features are really good.

Will it have a big impact on performance?

from my experiences with it, not really. Plus you wouldn't need to worry with a 970.
Or just use shadowplay... that would be easier haha. just crossed my mind that.
