IMHO, Vauxhall, Ford and French are no no. I'd be going with something German or something from Seat. You're budget is what? £12,000 or so for both car and insurance?
Get a nice Seat Leon Mk2 for £4000, slam it and put some alloys on it and you'll still have plenty left over.
