Alexyy wrote Here in the uk it's not custom to tip and I don't really see why it is either your getting paid already? yes, why do you need more? it just confuses me.

cause alot of waiter jobs here in america workers get paid way lower than minimum wage because its expected that people will leave tips minimum wage where im at is 7.25 and a waiter can get paid as low as 2.50 to 3.50 because its expected that your going to leave a tip

config wrote I think tipping if more of an American thing. I mean we do tip in UK just not as much as Americans for some reason. Only ever tip if I go on holiday or eat at a nice restaurant or something. Wouldn't tip a pizza delivery guy, at most I'd just say keep the change or something.

Have to agree with you here config. I'm from the UK also and from reading the replies it looks like tips are a major factor when it comes to ordering food. I usually tip when I have it but I'm usually tight for money so I'm not a regular tipper.

I've also heard in the US tips are added to the bill already. Are people talking about extra tipping or tipping in general? I've never been to the US so I can't confirm it's true.

I agree with Ruvik, what if you need the money yourself?

Axe wrote Ranting about people not giving you extra money is pretty greedy in my opinion. Tipping is not required, especially if they already spent a whole ton of money on their food.

If you give people good service, and people like you; then you might get tips just because people liked their service. Its not a requirement to give tips, and not everybody is financially stable so giving tips might not be the best thing for them on top of an already expensive meal.

I agree with everything that you said except one part...If people are not financially stable to give tips then those people should not be eating out to the begin with...So with that being said most people that eat out will usually have the extra money to tip but won't because they didn't like the service or are greedy. Just my thought on it though.

The motivation waiters and waitresses have to be nice to you and give good service is a tip at the end. They don't give a shit about you or your food. That's why you tip.

Ruvik wrote You get paid for your job, don't you?
I don't understand why we seem to have this idea that we should tip waiters and pizza boys but not supermarket assistants or secretaries, etc.

You do a job, you get paid.
If you don't like the pay and getting tips is something you need to stay afloat, find a better paying job.

In this service you get paid less than minimum wage because it's expected that someone will tip. Granted, it's not necessary, but it's the right thing to tip someone who makes less than minimum wage. He said it's a nicer place, so maybe his pay is better, but my brother works at a really upscale restaurant around my area and he gets payed less than minimum wage. I'm just trying to make a point that it's fair to tip, even if it's only a couple bucks. It's not always easy for everyone to go "find a better paying job."
