I just built my first PC and when I boot it for the first time the computer turns on and fans start spinning but nothing shows up on monitor. Tried hdmi and VGA same thing.

This may sound weird but, try re-seating your ram.

First, check if your power supply is switched to the left side. (some have a red thing that you can slide over on the back).
If the system is making beeps, then that would be that your ram is not seated fully, Take them out and put them back in till you hear a nice click or two.

Or it could just be a bad monitor. For me I just had to re-seat my ram. [Take al ram cards out besides one and see if it boots up]

Geb wrote just thought of this, it could also just be a bad cable
How would I know which cable is bad?
Also, I tried reseating the ram and only booting with one stick and still the same problem.

You plugged the display cables into the motherboard. You need to connect them to your GPU, not motherboard.
