Well, depends. What are you currently running? Download Speccy and post a screenshot, as well as tell us your PSU and case, both make and model. You may not be able to add/upgrade GPU yet if other components are lacking in quality or something.

I don't currently have a gaming pc. I was planning on starting with just a graphics card.

Why would you start with a graphics card? only thing you can do with it is put it on your shelf.

True. But I think it's one of the most important parts and now that I have some of the money I would like to buy it now rather than hold it off and buy something else.

That would be stupid. You could end up buying a $240 GPU and having to spend money on other things or not getting money to finish a rig and would just have $240 of wasted money sitting in your cupboard. Trust me, I know from personal experience. I have 2x970's, my case, my cooler, CPU and a few other components sitting in a cupboard. You could end up finishing the rig nearer the end of the year and the GPU could potentially be out-dated by then, or most likely, you could have got something better if you'd just waited. Save your money and build your rig all at once.

Why dont you start with the essential parts to get a running pc then when you have some more money buy what ever graphics you can afford.

You can build a apu pc which im sure sanctyy will post which will get you running for now.

If you dont need a pc right now save the money till your ready to buy all the parts.

A lot of the games today are CPU demanding.
