Beet wrote When I used the confederate flag as my avatar on this site for over 3 years I looked at it as southern pride. Upon actually educating myself on the matter I lost respect at the flag and today cringe at the thought of me using it. I do believe that the reason many still use it is just A. Ignorance or B. They are just plain racists. For most of the people on this site and in America, I do believe that A applies to them.
As for the swastika most of the people that still see it as a symbol of peace and love are from South Asia. Most in the Western world see it just as the Nazi Party symbol.

It's not only in South Asia but it is more common over there, yes. I think calling them ignorant is a little harsh. Granted, many who are proud of the confederate flag are uneducated but that can be said about many, many things. I mean, so many people in England and Scotland have British flags(actually, Scotland is usually Scottish flags, as opposed to British) on their windows, simply because it's where they live. A few years back, I'd have gladly hung a Scottish flag in my room. Ask me now, why I'd have done that and I couldn't even give you an answer. Many don't understand or know the history behind the confederacy(myself included, I'm not all too wised up on it which is why I don't really have a stance on the confederate flag personally).

I am bored so I am gonna take a few minutes to explain the history of the confederate flag.

The Confederate States of America succeeded from the US in 1861 following the election of Abraham Lincoln as President. Their main reason was because of him and his party anti-slavery position. These states had been threatening leaving for decades. Abraham Lincoln and the USA fought to keep the nation together. The CSA had a flag but it was not the "Stars and Bars" as what you see everyone talk about today.

This was later gotten rid of as the flag and replaced with what is now known as the confederate flag but with a white background.

The modern confederate flag was really only a battle flag.

Between 1865, the end of the war and the 1920s, the modern confederate flag was not used much at all. In the 1920s came the second rise of the Ku Klux Klan(KKK). The KKK was a white supremacist terrorist organization that ran around in white robes and cone shaped hats, terrorizing minority communities so that they would "know their place." The KKK would very often and still does today use the confederate flag. Pretty much, they were the hipsters to bring it back in the first place.

The confederate flag was used much in the south for the next 50 years during the civil rights era by white supremacists, which at the time was pretty much most of the south because it was so much embedded into the culture. During the Civil Rights era of the 1950s - 1970s many white supremacists would wave the flag and use it as intimidation. Because this became so embedded into the culture during this time, many in the south just thought of the flag as a normal thing they grew up with where as blacks saw it as a symbol of oppression. Much of this culture is gone but there is still some there.

I say that most of the supporters of the flag(as I once was) are just ignorant of history and facts. Many grew up seeing their neighbor or their friend at school or perhaps a family member waving it around or wearing it on a shirt or something and they did not understand its full meaning and history.

Not once did I say you called the swastika racist. What I said, was that if you don't think the confederate flag symbolizes racism, you must think the same of the swastika, right?
Not once did I say you said I thought it was racist. I'm just saying, it's entirely irrelevant to me as I was not in the debate about how the swastika is or isn't racist and using it as a means to justify the non-racism of the confederate flag. The swastika has nothing to do with the confederate flag, so it shouldn't be in this discussion.

But to answer your question, no. I do not think it symbolizes racism. But, I do think that most people today would think the opposite. They only look at what the swastika stood for during WW2, and they have no idea what it really means as you have brought up before. (Peace and tranquility)

Sanctyy wrote I'm not going to get in to the confederate flag or anything but saying a flag can't be seen as racist is just wrong. If you're going to argue that the confederate flag isn't racist then I can argue that the swastika isn't racist.

Just what I expected, butthurt Americans.
