I mean, your making a big deal out of this. It would only kill the motherboard if anything and you can just say it was dead on arrival and send it back.

Also the static would come from somewhere like a thick carpet or a wooly jumper, so its not some magical occurrence you need constant protection from.

heck, i rebuilt my PC on a carpet at 2AM one day with no strap and here I am typing this on it...

A couple quid to save **** up a £1000 dollar system, even if it happens 0.1% of the time.

It's not just random, if you are careful when handling parts then the chance of this happening is even lower, the regular person that builds one PC and then maybe upgrades it later on will pretty much not have any problems with ESD.

Of course it's not random, but there are things that are out of your control that you may not think about. An ESD event is 'bound' to happen at least once in every thousand times you spend any amount of time working internally, whether or not you have done something to actively protect yourself (being a wriststrap - eliminating the 'forgetful' factor of touching the case) is up to us.

You need to be grounded out, meaning touching your case would be the alternative.
