There is some theories going around that the coup was staged by the Erdogan Regime. What set people off with the theories is during Erdogan's speech in Istanbul last night, he called it a "gift from god" as now it gives the chance to cleanse the military of members of the gang - whatever in the hell that means exactly, I'm just going to assume that's anti-Erodgan supporters, Kurds or both. Some are also thinking this gives the excuse for Erdogan to continue his "anti-terror" crackdowns that have been going on.

Here's some articles regarding the theories, the second link states that even some Western diplomats were apparently voicing concerns in private about the possibility of Erdogan using the coup as an excuse to abuse his powers, which is pretty interesting.

If the amount of people that have been arrested had actually been involved in the coup, it would have succeeded.
