Lol the towel trick causes further damage to your xbox but it is a good short term fix.
Your best bet is to do the heatgun fix, it worked great for me.

Yeah you have to leave it on wrapped in towels. Unplug your hdd from it though.
And you'll know it's overheated because the rrod will show a different pattern

Probably around an hour. I'm not sure though because it depends on your motherboard as well as how many towels/ blankets you have on it
