Has anyone actually tried to jet gun the turbine while it is powering the electrical trap? If not I'm going to be trying it in the game I just started.

I think we are going about analyzing this all wrong. We are asking HOW to light up the tower and HOW to make the beams go to and from the tower instead of asking WHY we are building this thing, or WHY ...
