why dont u sell it and say u never had it

Hand it to the police, if the US is like the UK they'll give you the phone after about a month if no one claims it.

Hand it in and see if someone claims it. Where I live if you hand something into the local police station and it isn't claimed within a certain time they will let you keep it.

Tey only trace phones if there company phones or display phones they never trace someones personal phone or else i would have had all my lost or stolen phones tracked ..Pretty much they never track because they make more money off you when you buy a new one they dont care about you personaly just how much profit they can make simple as that

If anything sell it or use it as an ipod or something also go into settings and do a system restore and when you restore and boot back up when it gives you the option to activate it select no so its not activated or sell it for something you want e.i Heroin? Coke?-Cola or something else illegal and drug related have fun and enjoy
