You pay to maintain the servers and moderators.
It shouldn't be free because theres a lot of people on XBL, if it was free, it'd be easier to call friends instead of contacting via XBL.
However, they should bring down the cost - 6 a month is kind of ridiculous.
But they usually do promotional offers - I just buy them (if possible).
Make your own judgement.

yes because ps3 has free live and it has almost the same features as a xbox so they should give us free live
