You took him through police training? Wow, congratulations on the graduate.

My friend's 15 year old rotti passed away about 5 months ago, and it was her dog that would help her train all the other dogs she'd be training. So she got a German Shepherd named Diesel. This dog failed Police academy at the kindergarten level. Smart dog though, and is already trained to do so many things at just the age of 1.

So you'd recommend a purebred German Shepherd?

A mix of Labrador / German Shepherd probably wont be a guard dog (but it might be, depends on how much Shepherd is in it)

yeah, well the colour of the lab doesn't determine the temperment of it, but I get what you're saying.

The thing with the mix is that it will be protective sometimes from the Shepherd side of it, and lovable, and big hearted like the labs.

Thanks!

I've got a lab. Father wins Kruffs like almost every year, so. And to get it straight there are two types of "labs" .. GOLDEN LABRADOR AND LABRADOR RETRIEVER... Totally different dogs but all beautiful..if ur looking for a one man dog then a Shepherd.. Theyre loyal to one person only.. That's general now all different.. Both labs somehow know a threat from experience and will protect all family members from attackers.. My dog ran onto the road one day as me and my bro were on the ground fighting against sum chap..long story.. But my dog is terrified to go on the road cause he got hit be a car when he was young.. But it shows how loyally they are.. But take everything into account. Eg if u intend to let the dog off the lead for a walk.. People will intend to be less scared of labs.. My advice is to look around. If u meet a pup of any kind u will take the first u see cause they are so cute.. Just promise me u don't call it something silly.. Mine is Charlie! DON'T GET A DOG FOR PROTECTIVE REASONS.. All dogs are protective of what's theirs! [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Labs are just as protective just aren't as scary looking as shepherds. Shepherds are a little bigger about an inch.. Not much difference tbh.

My mom owned a German Shepherd/Lab mix and he was very gentle and loving. I did own a Beagle/Rottweiler mix and she was honestly the best dog I have ever owned, sadly she ended up passing away from a very sever and rapid cancer last year. My mom now owns a Lab/Red Nosed Pit mix, he too is honestly the sweetest dog I've ever seen. I'd say, if you like a certain breed, or if that dog just fits your life style and personality, go with it.
