To be fair on the whole "discovering America" thing, if it wasn't for the Europeans, all of us who live in developed countries outside of Europe and Southeast Asia would not have the same quality of life, freedom, education, opportunity and wealth that we do now. If it wasn't for the colonization of these countries by the Europeans, we would not be the same right now. Medicine, science, education, technology, etc. The way that you're living right now is because of colonization by the Europeans. Sure, some other European would have "found" America if Christopher Columbus didn't, but the world as a whole would be at a disadvantage if Christopher Columbus did not exist. Yes, Christopher Columbus (if what you are saying about him is true, a source of all this "information" would be helpful) is a horrible person. But, the things that happened as a result of his "discovery" of America is the reason why the holiday exists. Sure, Leif Ericson discovered the Americas first, but Christopher Columbus was the first to get lasting contact with the Americas.

Here's the thing about the Natives. If Christopher Columbus didn't discover America, eventually, the British would have "discovered" Canada. Now, we still treated the Natives horribly and drastically reduced their population. Not to the extent that the Americans did, but still. It was the colonization mentality, and it doesn't make it right, but Columbus wasn't even directly responsible for many of the deaths of the Natives anyways.

Saying 'If someone didn't do something we wouldn't be where we are today.' doesn't make what they did right. You're saying this in hindsight, when at the time, he could have completely ruined the world for what it could have been.

If Hitler hadn't of caused war technological advances made because of war wouldn't have been made.
