Call of Duty Black Ops - Official Peripherals Review

Everyone's counting down to the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops on November 9, but we've managed to get our hands on a less explosive, but regardless exciting element of the Activision launch; the official accessory line-up.

On November 9 Mad Catz is set to release a range of high-end accessories to accompany this year's biggest FPS launch - developed in full conjunction with Activision and Treyarch.

The Black Ops gear isn't cheap, but it definitely feels like its had time and cash injected into its design - this is quality stuff.

We've had hours to test them out, and we're very impressed. Here are our thoughts:

Black Ops PrecisionAIM Controllers
Price: 39.99
Out: Nov 9

The most common acquisition from the Black Ops accessory roster will no doubt turn out to be the PrecisionAIM console controllers, which are clad in 'military inspired' Rubber Grips and soft-touch finish. Their creator says they are 'ideal' for extended gaming sessions.

On the rear of both pads are a pair of 'Combat Buttons' offering the option to remap face buttons, which we found incredibly useful for freeing up the analogue sticks and moving the often essential sprint and melee functions to an easier-to-reach location.

The Combat Buttons can also be used to set the analogue sticks to 'Precision Aim' mode - slowing down feedback in a similar fashion to high-end gaming mice. We imagine hardcore snipers will find this functionality useful at times, but for us, this proved an underused feature.

The most important functions of the Black Ops pads, however, are their look and feel. Both pads feel very much like quality peripherals - with the soft-touch finish on the faces in particular feeling very easy on the skin after extensive deathmatch sessions.

As for pure form, the Xbox 360 controller does feel slightly more comfortable than its PlayStation 3 cousin, with the latter causing many in the office to complain about its width and quality of analogue sticks in particular.

Oh, and it might be superficial, but it's still awesome: Both controllers have LED sticks. Nice.

VERDICT

Good: Soft-touch finish feels quality, Combat Buttons useful
Bad: Xbox slightly more comfortable than PS3
Rating: 8 / 10

Call of Duty: Black Ops Stealth Gaming Mouse
Price: 89.99
Out: Nov 9

Despite appearances this isn't actually the Bale-era Bat Mobile - it's the Black Ops Stealth Gaming Mouse.

Here's the science bit: Powered by Mad Catz Cyborg R.A.T. tech, the Black Ops Stealth Gaming Mouse features a new generation "twin-eye" 5600DPI gaming grade laser sensor, which apparently reads each axis separately for pinpoint accuracy.

What does that mean? It's crazily accurate, which will almost definitely result in you wrestling to select your desktop items for the first 20 minutes of its use. Luckily, the sensitivity can be adjusted by a handy button on its top side, meaning you can fine-tune sniping and run-and-gun scenarios on the fly.

Not a new invention, but good stuff. Also useful for holding-your-breath scenarios is the sniper button on the mouse's left-hand side. This quickly switches to ultra-precise sensitivity for nailing the perfect shot. It's is extremely useful and should be included on ALL gaming mice.

The mouse's big selling point is its bespoke feel; the lower-section can be pulled out until it's most comfortable for you, and like Microsoft's own Sidewinder, it offers 30g of removable weights to get the exact feel you're after. Hardcore stuff.

The comfort factor's boosted by the soft-touch finish found on the Black Ops console controllers, which feels classy and definitely helps after prolonged use. It also feels extremely solid - and when combined with the frankly amazing customisation options, it's arguably the most versatile mouse on the market.

The Black Ops Stealth Mouse also includes a 1GB USB Flash Drive disguised as a Black Ops dog tag - but at 89.99 it's definitely at the higher end of the market. If you can afford the investment, it's definitely worth the cash.

VERDICT
Good: Amazing customisation, smart functionality
Bad: Can you afford one?
Rating: 10 / 10

Black Ops Dolby Digital True 5.1 ProGaming Headset
Price: 129.99
Out: Nov 9

The prize of the package is the Tritton Limited Edition Dolby Digital True 5.1 ProGaming Headset, which at 129.99 RRP is just a tad pricey, but one very competitive piece of kit.

From the moment you pull open the gigantic Black Ops-branded box to reveal a smart CoD travel bag inside, it's obvious the designers haven't held back on quality. Everything about it looks and feels expensive.

At first we were convinced we'd need our own team of Black Ops soldiers to put together the startling array of leads and plugs included in the travel bag. The pack includes an almost unnecessary amount of components, including snap-on microphone, Dolby Digital decoder box, optical, Xbox Live mic and US cables. There are also power adaptors, volume controls and God knows what else you'd need to get the bang noises maxed out in Black Ops.

However, the headset passed our second test with ease; it feels snug on your bonce and is easily adjusted, with included ear pads allowing you to choose between leather and cloth textures.

Our third test was passed a little sooner than we expected - as we were almost immediately blown away by the oomph of the Xbox 360 boot-up video.

The Black Ops ProGaming Headset connects to PS3 or Xbox 360 through a total of eight drivers (four in each ear cup), which is said to deliver a "wholly authentic" 5.1 experience.

Make no mistake, the sound this thing puts out is every bit as quality as the headset feels, with bullets whizzing and grenades exploding with all the crispness and clout of a seat in the cinema.

Using the detachable boom microphone you can also communicate on Xbox Live or PSN, and you can adjust in-game audio (including front, rear, center and sub channels) and chat levels to your preference.

The price point, though competitive with rival products, may tempt gamers towards cheaper headsets in Tritton's own range. But it's undeniable that the completeness of the Black Ops Headset package will be hard to find elsewhere.

VERDICT

Good: Excellent sound and presentation
Bad: Tricky to assemble
Rating: 9 / 10

Call of Duty: Black Ops Stereoscopic 3D Q&A

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few weeks, you should be aware that the upcoming Call of Duty: Block Ops will feature a stereoscopic 3D mode. On every system.

Senior Manager IT at Treyarch, Robert Sanchez, was kind enough to answer some of my questions on the subject.

While nothing new is revealed here (these questions were issued the day of the announcement, but the answers came in just today), it's perhaps interesting to note that the 3D rendering method being used in COD: Black Ops appears to be similar to that of Invincible Tiger or Avatar: The Game, meaning the game renders each frame at half the horizontal (on the Xbox 360) or vertical (on the PS3) resolution. This means the full 720p image is eventually achieved by stretching and "overlapping" actual 640x720 or 1280x360 frames.

Anyway, enjoy the read and allow me to thank Francesca Carotti, Italian PR Manager at Activision, for making this possible. Grazie cara

When did you come up with the decision to add 3D support to Black Ops?
3D was being worked on as an R&D project. Initially we didn't think it was going to be a part of Black Ops but they put a demo together for us and once we saw it we knew it had to be in the game.

What sort of 3D technology does Call of Duty: Black Ops use? Is it true stereoscopic 3D (two different images being generated) or does it use the depth data to simulate the 3D effect?
Call of Duty: Black Ops uses true stereoscopic 3D tech. We render two actual frames at a time, one for each eye.

Will there be an option to adjust the 3D strength?
No, we tuned the 3D effect for comfort. We wanted to give the players the ability to play for hours on end if they chose to.

Does 3D support extend to multiplayer splitscreen output?
Yes, we do support 3D multiplayer splitscreen.

Is there any difference in how 3D is achieved on PS3 compared to PC or Xbox 360?
Yes, Xbox uses side-to-side rendering while the PS3 uses top-bottom. The PC uses the nVidia 3DVision tech.

What are the drawbacks in terms of frame rate or resolution when the 3D mode is active (PS3 version)?
The drawbacks of true stereoscopic 3D are that you have to draw everything twice. The thing is our game already runs pretty fast and we were able to optimize the game so that we could minimize the impact 3D had on performance.

What's your personal "wow 3D moment" relative to Black Ops?
It's too hard to pick just one moment in our game. I really like a lot of moments in our game in stereoscopic 3D. But if I had to pick one I would have to pick the moment in WMD when you are rappelling down the side of a cliff.
