To put what you're saying in perspective, the Core 2 Extreme QX6850 was released in 2007 at $1000. The i7 980x was released in 2010 for $1200. Compare the 980x to a current $220 CPU:

Spend half as much, upgrade twice as often. You'll have a faster CPU more of the time and you'll keep up with the standards. The industry moves too fast for you to beat. If you really think you'll have a tangible benefit from going with a Ivy Bridge-E CPU over the 1150 i7, you already know what you need.
