I hate cigarettes. They smell horrible and are a huge money wasting addiction. I have no idea why marijuana is illegal but cigs are legal.

I would be illegal if it did not make the government billions and so many people did it when they found the health risks..

_Alex_ wrote The only reason why smoking is still legal it's because it brings so much revenue for governments. We could say the same thing as why isn't there any cures for the common cold? It's because companies that sell drugs (Advil, Tylenol, etc.) would basically lose most of their sales and probably go bankrupt.
It's all about making money and it will always be.
*Just my 2 cents :p
Totally agree with you Alex.
Alot of companys need the sales.

Although smoking is, like you say, a horrible addiction. It has a significant effect on our economy. We make a lot of money from selling cigarettes, if I'm not mistaken. If you made them illegal, it'd just bring the crime rate and illegal activity up.

I see where you are coming from but I highly doubt they will make cigarettes illegal for the simple fact that the government collect more money from the sale of cigarettes than retailers, wholesalers, farmers and manufacturers combined.

I don't know about that. Of course the black market for cigarettes would happen, but I dont think it would be like the Drug Trade of MJ or Coke, etc.
No one ever thinks of this..if they banned cigarettes...yes the government would lost ALOT in taxes. But thinks of the thousands of dollars each person would save if they didn't buy cigarettes (obviously not garunteed they would buy another drug but) and actually saved their money or spent it on essentials or wants they government would see a drop in taxes from cigarettes but a rise in other products also savings in people and maybe a better economy than right now.
Price of Cigarettes here is a little over $5.50
Lets just say $5.
My dad buys 2 packs every day. But even so...lets say 1 pack everyday.
$5 x 365 = $1825 on cigarettes.
$1825 x 2 = $3650 (my dad spends this on cigarettes every year!)
Millions smoke. Just think of how many games you could buy with that, how many bars of soap, how much food, how many oil changes, how many new hair do's, a decent ring for an anniversary present, water bottles, paper. YOU NAME IT!
But don't forget guys, I have two parents who smoked that much. So double $3650 a year.
$7300 a year. Even if there is a deal on cigarettes or buying by the carton, how much could it lower you too? $6000? $6500?

I can somewhat agree, I always hated the smell of it and I will never start smoking. All it has are negatives, People smoke because of "stress" but there are many other ways to get rid of stress.

I disagree. Prohibitions do not work and will only lead to illegal trading and violence. It'd be more of a hassle than it's worth.

whether or not you hate smoking is no justification for making it illegal, a number of things can kill you if you have alot of it, drinking water can kill you if you have too much, smoking is in no way something that should be illegal
