Mk1 Eclipses are nice and cheap, can even get lucky and find one with a turbo for a good price.

Hahaha 'UK' the insurance on one of those would be bad.

Personally I would say just go for a cheap, not particularly good first car. Cheapest insurance rates would be for something like a Citroen C1, if you want something with a bit more power and looks, I'd say go for a 2002-04 VW Golf I think thats the year with a 1.4L model. Those are normally around £800 for the year with a black box fitted.

Just did an insurance comparison and you are looking at around £7,000+ a year for that car in the UK, that is with the turbo. That works out at just under $11k but it could be different depending on the details people put in.

You can get one of these Polo's for really cheap, insurance should be okay too, providing you get a 1.2 or something. 1.4+ engines at 17 are too expensive.
