So i bought a new cooler for my cpu and after the whole morning of pricking about i got it in and all the cables and got my computer to launch. BUT when i went on to check my new temps i tried to launch cod 4 and instantly would not work it gave me the usual error message it does when it crashes (which was strange cause it never crashed on lauch before it did it everytime) then i launched dead island as its A steam game now it did lauch but my graphics card was screaming making a very bad noise. So i powered down and came here for help heres my build [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

I cannot confirm it was from my graphics card it could have been something else

I gota go to work aswell i will read replies later

did you clean the old thermal paste off the cpu and re-apply some new one before putting in the new cpu cooler?

The noise that was possibly coming from your GPU is more than likely coil whine.

You might want to remove all thermal paste on your CPU now and put some new paste on. Also don't spread it manually, let the cooler spread it out when its place on the CPU.

Did you clean off the old thermal compound before putting the new one on? Also when you say "spread it" you don't mean you physically spread it, did you? A CPU Cooler, Heatsink or watercooling block will spread it out evenly when you mount it to your CPU.

Anyways, the "screaming" noise you are hearing, sounds like coil whine, it could be your GPU, but it could also be your PSU and I believe it's even possible for some CPU coolers to get coil whine. Open your side panel of the case and then run a game (preferably the game that you started hearing the noise on, unless all games do it now) and listen to try and determine where the noise is coming from.

Have you made sure that the heatsink fan is spinning?

If not, its either 1 of 2 things.

A bad heat sink mount on the CPU

or

Too much / little thermal paste

Remember, the thermal paste is there simply to help transfer the heat from one sorce to another and fill in the air gaps. A pea size dot should be placed in the middle and you should be all good.

To make sure your getting good coverage, Id re-apply and put the heatsink on fully. Then, un-do it. You will see 1 of 3 things. Too much thermal paste where it goes over the CPU edge and onto the socket. To little where the corners are not getting filled with paste and just enough where the CPU is covered by a thin layer that may just go over the edges of the CPU ever so slightly.
