Well, I would suggest looking through craigslist around your area first.

... And?
We need more info than that. Where are you located? MY advice on US vehicles doesn't do much for someone in the UK.
What do you want to do? Do you want to haul a lot? Do you want something you can drive around a lot friends in? Something sporty? Muscle car?
If you want something to haul stuff for work, I'd look into a '97-03 Ford F-150, or '94-01 Ram 1500. If you have any questions on a '97-03 F-150 let me know, I know a lot about these trucks. They are super easy to work on which is why I recommend one.
If you want a muscle car, I'd look at the '94-04 Mustangs with the 4.6L engine. The 4.6L is a great engine and there is so much you can do to these cars.

Assuming your in the United States, a good first car would be any binds Civic, or accord. They have loads of after market parts for cheap. Parts from any Honda pretty much fit on any Honda. They are dirt cheap and reliable. And fairly easy to fix.
