Call it a "State of the Review-nion" if you will
.....sorry that was bad. Looking over the section it is easy to see that over the last few years the general quality of most reviews has really increased. Due to the number of reviews we have, we're able to be more specific with our criteria versus in a past time where most any review posted more than a paragraph could be accepted out of need. Moving forward a couple changes are being made to the section to help keep the standards while still allowing users without a journalism degree to continue posting reviews of the games they play. Update #1: Replacement of existing reviews Currently we have the policy that allows you to post a game review even if the game is already reviewed. You can post the review as a reply to the existing review. However, many of the existing reviews have become archived, the OP has been suspended, or time has not been kind to them and there are many AAA games that have reviews in place that aren't great quality. Therefore, after going through many of the reviews, I've decided to hide a number of them from the section, opening them up for new reviews on the Review posting thread.
If one of your reviews was one of those hidden, do not worry, they still count towards your Review numbers, and they are recoverable if it is decided that a better review will not be posted. Any questions, just send me a PM. List of the Reviews that are now hidden: 007 nightfire

Meaning, that by using our Upvote system a Game Reviewer can upvote a review submission and a staff member will then add it to the section thanks to the badge holders recommendation. Staff will still have final say in this situation and if a user is found to be abusing this system, the review will be deleted and the Game Reviewer will have their badge removed. Update #3 (as of 12/13/18): Changes to review requirements Reviews that include information and opinions on the Graphics/Art of the game now require you to include images/videos of the gameplay as an additional resource to your review. Game reviews are an "Opinion" Piece, not a book report. Meaning, your reviews should include criticisms and praise of the game, not just an explanation of the story. In the past couple months nearly all reviews have included the "Storyline" section, and just explained what happens in the story. That's what the wikipedia page is for, do not do that. Give your opinions on the story/game mechanics, how well it works, what doesn't work, etc. If a review is posted but does not include this required information, it will not be considered for approval until it is updated with the items. Update #4 (As of 12/13/18): Game Reviews that are submitted to our Submission Thread , and are not up to the standard required for official posting will be left on the thread so that the OP has the chance to update the post and possibly have it approved later. If your post is not approved after being looked over, the Staff member overseeing your post will send you a PM letting you know and welcoming any changes you wish to make for it to be reconsidered for approval. If you wish the post be deleted, please make sure you inform the staff member so that they can remove it.
This is how the system has been working for a few months, however I noticed I hadn't made an official announcement regarding it. Update #5 (1/25/19 Update): Change to the Game Reviewer Badge As of today, the requirement for receiving the Game Reviewer badge is being changed from 50 reviews, to 20. The reasoning behind this is that it's been decided that the original 50 number is fairly daunting to those who might be interested in going for the badge/creating reviews.
Hopefully this will encourage more activity in the section. I'm going to go through and find the Members who already have reviews >= 20, but less than the former 50, and award them the badge. If you meet this requirement please inform me and I'll make sure you are given the award, as there's no other way for me to check this other than going through each page of the section finding each members posts manually. If anyone has questions regarding this just let me know. I'll update this thread with any new information or changes that happen. This overhaul took a lot of tabs and typing so I'm sure I made a couple goofs, if you notice any feel free to PM me with them and call me a loser, thanks! |

These are some good mandatory changes. Hopefully it will boost the quality of reviews and not the quantity.
I've been thinking about doing game reviews but I just don't think I have the time. Maybe I'll do a few of the hidden ones seeing as they're hidden for a reason. |

I would love to see a rule update to have a mandatory 5 sentences or more in each category you're reviewing(discluding Controls). Ive been seeing reviews with a minimum of 2 sentences for Plot and Graphics. These are not classified as reviews as they are just a quick explanation coming from your ass. |

As a rule of thumb I don't think typically accept any that are less than a decent paragraph per section because it's impossible to write quality content without at least putting that much effort into it. But if there are published reviews that have this feel free to PM me them and I'll give them a look over. Same goes for any game reviewer that wants to help me with that, Craig and I have discussed it already and the help is always appreciated. I couldn't look over every review because I'm one person and there's a 1300 strong catalog. |

I'm glad to see this section is still active. Hope to see some of those older reviews come back, but even better (including mine). |

Newest update:
As of today, the requirement for receiving the Game Reviewer badge is being changed from 50 reviews, to 20.
I'm aware that there is the possibility of current Game Reviewers being upset over this change, however I hope that you guys can understand where I am coming from on this, as the section has gone through changes in the past few years (Higher quality expectations from reviews, removal of apps/mobile games for example), and so I think it was imperative that changes were made as it's obvious to most anyone who browses the section that activity is low. If anyone has questions regarding this just let me know. |
