Xbox One Scorpio To Feature 4K Blu-Ray Player, Supersampling And More

4.7
It looks like Microsoft is ensuring that the Scorpio is perceived as a major improvement over the existing Xbox One all around, without any existing games needing any patches, as has been the case on the PS4 Pro. According to a report on Windows Central, existing games that make use of dynamic scaling on Xbox One will achieve their target resolutions more frequently on Project Scorpio- in simple terms, this means that a game that uses dynamic resolutions should be able to hit, say, 1080p (if 1080p was a target resolution for it to begin with) more during gameplay on Scorpio, without any intervention needed on the developer’s part. Framerates will also automatically be more stable on Scorpio.

But that’s not all that the Scorpio will entail- apparently, the console comes with Shader Model 6 (SM6) and shader compiler improvements. SM6 is an API for creating shading, and should bump up efficiency across the board, saving developers time and system resources. It also sounds like this will be made available for standard Xbox One consoles too, in addition to Scorpio, naturally.

It also sounds like games that sport 4K assets will enjoy graphics enhancements on 1080p displays, which will come down to the console’s supersampling technology. All of this is to say that even with a standard 1080p monitor, the difference between Scorpio and existing Xbox One systems should be clear on just about any game.

That said, Windows Central’s report does note that to get the full impact of what the Scorpio is, you will need a 4K TV enabled with HDR. Unlike the PS4 Pro, the Scorpio will also come with a 4K Blu-ray player, with its image output achieved by HDMI 2.0a with Wide Color Gamut and HDR.

OmittingCoder I'd be genuinely surprised if this console was under the $700 price range. Any less and they would be losing too much

I really feel like they will not make the Scorpio around that price range. Only because they are always finding cheap ways to make the hardware perform efficiently and effectively. I know R&D isn't cheap, and they need to incur the cost it takes to develop and produce the console; but they are trying to keep in mind that people won't want to spend that kind of money when they could go out and purchase a pre-fab gaming PC that can still out-perform their console.

We won't know the final cost until later this year, so all we can do is speculate either until we get more specs on their hardware, or until they announce the actual retail cost.

Fibril I'm thinking of getting the scorpio, unsure yet though if I'll purchase a 4K TV or keep 1080p. Once more info comes out about the console I'm sure I'll decide.

even if you dont get a 4k tv the picture will be truly amazing

1080p and 4k are basiclly the same. The eye cannot see 4k but I have one and its better than 1080. Would recommend a 4k TV but dont get a smart one.

The eye cannot see 4k, I really hope you're a troll.

From what I read online, depending on your eye sight, distance between the TV etc could see improvement or same as 1080p. I also read online depending what down-scaler the system would have picture quality could be degraded down-scaling to 1080p. Hopefully more info comes to light soon :)

Decy I Don't know why there even bothering with the Blu-Ray Player.. who actually buy's DVD's now a days lol...

A lot of people actually. For a lot of people a 12gb+ movie is a bit too much to stream and a lot of people use their system as an entertainment system hooked up to their sound systems.
