Sony Controls Over Half of the Global Console Market

4.6
The success of Sony in the current generation of consoles has been fairly well documented, with PS4 sales topping 50 million worldwide at the end of last year. However, now the gaming community can see exactly how much of the console market is controlled by the company, thanks to a recent report from IHS Markit that reveals Sony held a huge 57 percent share of the console market in 2016.

This share comes down to a total of $19.7 billion spent by gamers, which is split between hardware, software, and service markets. Apparently, Sony is also estimating that this domination of the console market will continue into 2017, and the company is even predicting that its sales will reach above the $20 million mark, placing this additional rise on the continued expansion of the digital gaming market.

This, of course, comes down to the huge success of the PS4. The console had almost double the market share of Microsoft’s Xbox One, with the Microsoft system reaching an install base of just over 27 million by the end of 2016. With that in mind, it’s easy to see how Sony could take up such a large portion of the market in general.

At the moment, the PS4 itself doesn’t show much sign of slowing down, either, with continued strong sales into 2017. Sony’s console took the top spot in sales in both January and February, which is a testament to the staying power of the PS4.

However, 2017 will bring with it many more challenges for Sony, with its competitors stepping up their attempts to take back control of console gaming. Nintendo has now launched the Switch console, which has had a very solid start to its life on the market, while Microsoft will also release Project Scorpio by the end of the year. It’s certainly a tougher line-up of competition than Sony faced in 2016, which means that the company may need to find other ways to keep its stranglehold on the market.

Of course, releasing interesting new software for the PS4 will certainly help matters, and the start of 2017 is already going well from that point of view. After all, Horizon: Zero Dawn is now Sony’s best-selling new intellectual property for the PS4, selling a phenomenal 2.6 million copies since its launch. Sony will no doubt be hoping that other releases over the course of 2017 will be equally as strong.

Miss As much as I am a Sony fan, to be fair, they did have a larger market.

To be fair yes they did. But personally, and I was an owner of Xbox One and PS4, but made the switch to PC, I don't see how PS4 stayed ahead. Xbox One in my opinion had better software and smoothness of game play compared to PS4 when it came to network games (same games for me) so I never understood how they stayed ahead. The fact that they didn't even support 5Ghz Frequency Signals amazed me on they cheaply went the old route when it came to network capabilities. I played wired for the most of my console days, but wireless at first. PS4 disappointed me a ton, but most of my friends bought PS4 so I stuck with it. Now I gave up on the consoles and went PC and play with just a handful of friends instead of a bunch.

Herd mentality is strong. A bunch of people complain (rightfully so at the time) about the Xbox and its always online DRM and eventually it snowballs into a wave of hate against it and people jumping ship. Of course Microsoft making Kinect a mandatory add on pricing the Xbox a whole $100 higher than the PS4 didn't help either. I'm sure it would be a much closer market share if Phil Spencer was the head of the Xbox Division back in early 2013.

Completely agree with you, If they had released the console without the Kinect from the start, i think it would have been very different. I think once it comes time for Crackdown and other exclusives to release such as the next Halo game (not the Halo wars RTS)

I have a $2500 pc, xbox one and ps4 and ps4 still has the best games so,.........

in your opinion.... not everyone elses.

I'm kind of surprised that Sony took over the market. Xbox is by far the better console in comparison.

I have to agree with Ilcamorrista of course they will profit more with more releases.

Maybe because they brought out so many versions of the PlayStation in the same year.

I don't see what's so good about this console, okay they have a few games other consoles don't get, but isn't enough for me to make a purchase.. Considering all PS4 players suck in my opinon, all youtubers who play it slay kids, yet on xbox it's nothing like that.. lmao

They may have sold more than microsoft and all but there not in control of the market that is the stupidest thing i've seen no big corp is in control of there market. Pretty sure Sony loose money everytime they sell 1 of there consoles anyway as it was the same back when they launched the PS3. love both companys have both consoles but as Saki said below the xbox was $100 more when it first came out and the always Online DRM was a big problem for people at the time.

Could never get back into the Playstation after the PS2. Been Xbox ever since and all my friends agree too. Microsoft will bounce back.
