This is impressive for a number of reasons, but most notably because both the Wii and the Switch had a huge shortage problem. If the Switch was able to outpace even the Wii in the first two months, it could be on pace to beat even the most aggressive projections by analysts.
Nintendo has noted that the console has sold 2.74 million units worldwide in April, with more than double that sold in software sales. It's also dominated the console sale charts, beating out the PS4 and the Xbox One S.
Gamestop has been on record praising the Switch before, saying that stores constantly sell through their stock faster than they can supply them.

“This is one of the strongest and most successful gaming console launches for GameStop in the last several years," Gamestop Senior Director of Merchandising Eric Bright said back in March. "For those fans who are still looking for the Nintendo Switch, don’t worry–we’re getting more. And, we’re pretty sure that there are a lot of gaming fans who pulled all-nighters last night playing their new Switch, and who also called in sick to work today with ‘game-fluenza’ just to stay home and play even more.”
The large sales of both the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are likely to thank for the Switch's success. With even more games on the horizon for Nintendo at E3 and beyond, like Super Mario Odyssey, it seems likely that we'll be seeing the Switch do better overall than the Wii U, and if it continues on this pace, the original Wii as well.
