A recent Switch release trailer highlighted the game’s dynamic card-battling, thematic humor, and ever-changing dungeon maps. The deck-building formula gets inspiration from Slay the Spire with a mess of chaos from Monster Train or even Auto Chess.
Overdungeon is a mashup of tower defense, roguelike, and real-time card battles. These aren’t your typical cards. Expect chickens, spells, alpacas, and traps all put together to inflict damage on dungeons. Unlike the turn-based card games, the title’s real-time battles count on every second, hence the need to stay alert and think fast.
On top of that, it randomly generates over 50 events and regular dungeon runs - a major recipe for the dungeon-crawler chaos. As much as it incorporates thematic humor, challenges ramp up as you progress, testing your timing and tactics to the limit.
What’s most surprising is that Pocketpair didn’t bother to drum up major buzz about this release. There weren’t any flashy marketing campaign trailers or pre-launch hype. The decision to forgo any campaign could stem from the ongoing Nintendo lawsuit against Pocketpair and the latter wanting to keep things low-key.
It could also reflect their strategy to quietly test the console market without the added pressure of a big PR push, especially given the game’s limited initial reach on Steam. If Overdungeon does well, Pocketpair may also drop Palworld on Switch, but they have to first mend fences with Nintendo.
The Overdungeon launch on Switch is a weirdly timed move, but a crucial sign that the developers will keep things rolling. Overdungeon is available in English, Japanese, and Chinese for $14.99 on the Japanese eShop, with no word yet on when or if it’ll hit North America or Europe.
