PlayStation 5 expected to achieve 4K, perhaps 240fps according to analyst

Earlier this month, Michael Pachter made some claims about the Nintendo Switch outselling its competitors this year. Though the jury is still out on that one, Pachter didn't give Shawn Layden an inch after the Sony executive discussed their upcoming console refresh, the PlayStation 5.

Shawn Layden, PlayStation America CEO, told GamingBolt earlier that Sony was definitely going to do a new console, but that it would have to be a generational leap over the current offering, unlike the 'half steps' the firm took with the PlayStation 4 Pro. Michael Pachter however, didn't think they were being completely honest, so he had this to say:

“I really like Shawn and I don’t think he is attempting to mislead anybody. The PlayStation 4 Pro is better than the PS4, so I think that’s a half step towards the PlayStation 5. I think the PS5 will be another half step. So he is being honest when he said he is not doing a half step but the PlayStation 5…how much faster can it be? It will surely support 4K. Will it support 240 frames per second? Great. Will it play games that were made for the PlayStation 4 PRO? That’s the question. I think it will. So I think they will build a console that will backwards compatible with the PS4 Pro. So I think it will be perceived by the consumers to be a half step and I think Shawn is telling the truth when he says it’s will be a full fledged console,”

Pachter went on to discuss when he thought this new console would arrive. He pointed to a possible launch in 2019, and also noted that he feels that Sony has the next console cycle 'on lock', as the company definitely knows what it needs to do to win the next generation.

Microsoft raised some eyebrows when it announced the Xbox One X, calling the unit which puts an end to the traditional 'console generations', pointing to a future where every new updated console will be cross-compatible and would remain in the same family of devices. It is interesting how these two companies approach the console market in different ways, and it remains to be seen which path leads to success.

Doubt this will happen even if it did, it will not compare even close to the Xbox One X.

Apparently it's announced for end 2017 so let's see it pull this when it't out.

I'll have to see it to believe it, I doubt they'll be able to achieve this. But who knows.

kerrry Sony gotta go to bed fam, they gonna release the console and have 80fps max. Sorry but I can't believe this til I see it.

Na you gottago to bed fam, because theres no greater blow to Microsofts precious little xbox one x than Sony starting a new console generation. Pay $500 for a crapbox just to find out its gonna be obsolete the next year when ps5 drops. Lmfaoooo

Do you even understand what he was saying...? A PS5 is not going to do 4k 240fps. He said he can't believe that until he sees it which is a very valid thing to say. The term "crapbox" just proves your immaturity.

As much experience as this guy has, I don't think his 240fps claim is very realistic. Yea, 4k is fine, and maybe 1080p 240fps is feasible (but does it make any sense?).

4k 240fps isn't realistic with the technology we have right now unless you're throwing down money for a 700+ graphics card (more like two).

Perhaps that isn't what he meant, but either way 240fps on a console just doesn't seem reasonable let alone useful. Most tvs people own don't even refresh more than 60hz, so this would be a niche market thing.

TL;DR
240fps? Even at 1080p, for a console, I'd probably bet money it won't happen anytime soon.
