PUBG developer is not happy about Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode

Bluehole, the developer of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, said today that it has “concerns” about the recently released Battle Royale mode in Fortnite.

The developer issued a statement earlier claiming there are “growing concerns” in the Battlegrounds community about Fortnite’s replication of the model.

Fortnite, developed by Epic Games, received an update over a week ago that added a 100-player, last man standing game mode which is nearly identical to the Battlegrounds formula. The mode will receive a standalone release next week for free.

When announcing the mode, developers from Epic openly cited King of the Kill, and Battlegrounds as inspiration for the Fortnite iteration. “We’ve had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of UE4, the engine we licensed for the game,” Bluehole VP and executive producer Chang Han Kim said.

“After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known.”

Bluehole went on to say that the similarities extend to the structure, core gameplay, and even the UI elements. “We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press,” Chang Han Kim went on.

“This was never discussed with us and we don’t feel that it’s right.”

While Bluehole isn’t taking action for now, the company said that it’s “contemplating further action.”

It’s interesting that the developer mentions community feedback as the impetus for this release. I have not personally seen any online outrage about this from the PUBG community. Nonetheless, we’ll see how this develops over the coming days.

RepBandit They are very similar for sure and I can see why bluehole would be pissed. Both games are becoming hits and bluehole probably feels epic game just took their idea and ran with it and made it a little bit better game modes

If that's what the devs are think IT which it probably is then it's stupid- neither had the original idea, it's a gamemode.

It is true.. Its actually pretty fun aswell and they have a few unique aspects in there also.

Bit unessasary seeing as neither of these games had battle royale as an original idea.

They should be not happy, its a compition between the 2

They should treat it as competition anyways, only way to improve games further.

Swift What a bunch of babies. If they are so scared of Fortnite. Then they need to make a better game.

GrandExchange No one is gonna bring up the hunger games?

Right? and Is no one going to bring up the Battle Royale (2000) movie that was based off the book from 1999 that all this was based off of?

PUBG have already said, and reference on their website that the game was inspired by the movie.

OMG_IM_JOKIN Dayz and H1Z1 both had this type of idea. Then PUBG comes and takes this idea becomes popular thinking they own it? This is the gaming world. Good ideas are always "stolen".

not sure if just dense but h1z1 king of the kill was made by the same dev, just saying. They hired him because that's what he is good at. They restricted him on what he could do so the obvious step would be to make his own version that he can actually do what he wants with.
