A recent video taken during a playtest and posted to the developer’s Facebook page shows that Session is taking a more grounded approach to skating than the Tony Hawk series.
Originally scheduled for a 2016 release, creā-ture Studios delayed the game—formerly known as Project: Session—until sometime in 2018, with a trial version set to be released by the end of this year. While Session still doesn’t have a specific release date, the fact that it’s in the QA phase is a good sign.
Unlike other skating games, Session will forego the “turbo timer, gazillions of combo multipliers and s—” in favor of gameplay that promotes “creativity and freedom of expression, nothing else,” according to the developer.
“Something we want to do is that we’re not aiming directly at making a game itself,” creā-ture Studios founder Marc-andré Houde said in a recent interview. “We have a philosophy that Project: Session is a toy, something you launch and skate with friends, you do some skate games, or film with your friends, or something like this. This is something that’s going to be a big part of the game, it’ll be mostly online so you can play with friends and they’ll be able to film your tricks with an on-control design for the filmer mode.”
The game has been in development for several years, as the team working on it only had the resources to focus on development part-time. However, creā-ture Studios recently received funding from the Canada Media Fund that is allowing the studio to work on Session full-time.
Session is scheduled to launch sometime in 2018, though no platforms have yet been announced.
