Call of Duty: WWII is undoubtedly a hit with fans, having cleared an impressive $500 million in sales over the weekend. That said, we actually learned that someone isn’t too crazy about the game’s release – the manufactures behind the popular Humvee line of vehicles.

The company recently filed a lawsuit against Activision, the publishers of Call of Duty: WWII, over the unauthorized use of their brand as a military vehicle within the game. AM General, the manufacturers in question, indicates that Activision has been using the Humvee trademark without permission in a number of Call of Duty games over the years, along with strategy guides and with select toys. In the lawsuit, the company accused the company of “taking advantage of its goodwill and reputation.”

Humvee vehicles have been appearing in Call of Duty games since Modern Warfare rolled around back in 2007. Since then, we’ve seen it in the Modern Warfare games, as well as Black Ops II and Ghosts. Now it’s apparently in WWII, and that’s where AM General seems to be drawing the line.

The company has made note that Call of Duty’s success has come “only at the expense of AM General and consumers who are deceived into believing that AM General licenses the games.”

That’s stretching it a bit right here. The reason we say that is because the Call of Duty games have been based more around single and multiplayer content, and not necessarily thriving because a Humvee is in the game. If the vehicle was really that big a selling point, then the Humvee driving game for PlayStation 2, released years ago, would’ve been a colossal hit. Alas, it wasn’t.

The company also noted that the company’s use of the Humvee is “a key selling feature of the game,” and that’s another statement that’s a bit far-fetched. Nowhere on the packaging does the game specifically call out Humvees, or have something saying Call of Duty: WWII Magical Humvee Edition.



Activision has yet to respond to the lawsuit, but it is a little bit on the ridiculous side. If the Humvee has been appearing in Call of Duty games for the last decade, why hasn’t the lawsuit been filed sooner? Are they just now catching on to the fact that, “Hey, there are Humvees in this game!”

We’ll see what comes of this suit in the next few months.
