PlayStation 3 Takes Lead on Xbox 360 in Sales

The PlayStation 3 has taken the lead on the Xbox 360 in terms of sales in Europe, despite launching a full year behind the console. Data from IDG and Gamestop have shown that Sony's console has finally surged ahead of its major competition, though still well behind Nintendo. Nintendo holds the top two spots with its Nintendo DS & Wii. PlayStation 3 holds the third position, and Microsoft resides in last place.

The European figures are as listed:

46 Million Nintendo DS Units
24.9 Million Nintendo Wii Units
14.8 Million Sony PSP Units
14.7 Million Sony PS3 Units
13.7 Million Microsoft Xbox 360 Units

The numbers aren't quite so friendly to Sony in the United States however. Where Nintendo still has a strong grip on first and second place, Microsoft's console rates third, over both the PSP and PS3. The full U.S. figures are below:

47.3 Million Nintendo DS Units
34.2 Million Nintendo Wii Units
25.4 Million Microsoft Xbox 360 Units
19 Million PSP Units
15.4 Million PlayStation 3 Units

These numbers may suggest something that we have know for a very long time, the Xbox 360 is most popular in the United States. Both Microsoft and Sony could use a lesson in global branding from Nintendo, who has swamped the competition this generation. I suppose it's not entirely impossible for the Microsoft and Sony to catch the Wii in their respective regions of popularity, but it certainly looks like Nintendo has divided and conquered.

Sony Market Cap: 32.02B

In the end, MS still owns the world. Or atleast Sony by 182.07B dollars.
As opposed to the 1m ps3 unit gap over 360 in EUROPE. I mean, who cares, its EUROPE. Almost Irrelevant.

Thats like trying to say a Razr V3xx is better than a iphone 4...lol MSFT = #Winning

1) Prefer Xbox Live
2) Prefer the Xbox Controller

And as was said already, everybody already has an Xbox :) Of course PS3 is going to slowly catch up ^^

One thing they should probably research is the number of people that sell their PS3 to get an Xbox :)

1) Prefer Xbox Live
You prefer paying for something that should be free? Okay.
2) Prefer the Xbox Controller
There are third party controller that look like the Xbox 360 controller that you can use.
3) Prefer the Xbox itself

But the Wii has over 70+ million consoles sold so how is the Xbox only at 40-50?

I prefer a Keyboard and mouse over the 360 controller. See that it's an opinion. If you really don't like the controller then why not buy a third party controller it might even preform better than the original.

If you look at the sales they aren't far behind in fact the Ps3 is catching up to the 360 every week. But a person should care about the sales more than the games they are getting right?

You missed the point of why I mentioned the Wii if the everybody already has a Wii why is 360 no where near the sales of the Wii which is 86,178,431 total.
