While Black Ops 4 may be controversially ditching its single-player story mode in favor of wholly multiplayer experience, fans are over the moon that Battle Royale will be a new addition to Treyarch's latest game in the long-running subfranchise. Battle Royale is all the rage right now, but can Black Ops 4 really take it to another level?
Speaking at Black Ops 4's action-packed live reveal in LA (via Finder), game designer Matt Scronce boldly proclaimed that the game's Battle Royale will wipe the floor with similar games:
"We wouldn't do this if we didn't think we could do it best and better than everybody else. We've got a huge library of content, ten years of history, we've got the best gunplay out there, we've got the best movement, so we're not too worried about it. Honestly, we're just worried about making this damn thing as fun as possible. And look, we're in a world where there's plenty of room for multiple titles. We've seen that in first-person shooters as a whole. Y'know, people would sometimes ask 'how is Battlefield and CoD going to exist in the same industry?' We do. What we're doing is going to be different. Some players will gravitate to us and people may gravitate towards other games. We're making something that, when we play it, we have a whole lotta fun and I think we can grow out from that."
Dubbed Blackout, the Battle Royale mode will drop an unknown number of players into a map that is 1,500 times larger than the franchise's Nuketown map. A hat-tip to the history of the Black Ops franchise that started in 2015, Blackout will feature recognizable characters and weaponry while also adding something new. It all sounds very exciting, so it is no surprise that Scrone wants to hype one of Black Ops 4's biggest selling points.
While there is still plenty being kept back for E3, developers at Treyarch are keen to break the mold when it comes to Battle Royale gaming. Only recently, Fortnite has pushed the envelope further with its Infinity War crossover event and a dancing Thanos. Elsewhere, PUBG is accused of being a little behind the times but is teasing something new with the mysterious inclusion of some golden chests. What Black Ops 4 has up its sleeve to top its rivals remains to be seen, but at least the game has the confidence to do so.
