Gearbox CEO says he would trade Half-Life 3 for Borderlands 3 on Steam

Randy Pitchford has said that he will use “all the leverage and influence [he] can to get [Borderlands 3] on Valve’s store as soon as reasonably possible”… so long as “Gaben” (Valve’s Gabe Newell) announces Half-Life 3. This follows the reveal that the PC version of Borderlands 3 will be available exclusively through the Epic Games Store for the first six months after its release date of September 13.


Prior to the Borderlands 3 Epic Games Store exclusivity confirmation, Pitchford had voiced support of the platform on Twitter, saying “I am excited to support the Epic Games Store.” This lead to a mixed response from fans, with some growing concerned about the potential exclusivity deals that could affect upcoming Gearbox titles, like the then unannounced Borderlands 3.

On April 1, Pitchford posted a Twitter thread in which he explained that “2K/Take Two has exclusive publishing rights for Borderlands 3 and makes all decisions regarding price-points, territories, distribution and platform partnerships.” He then recommended that all inquiries related to the listed topics be directed towards 2K.

Continuing the Twitter thread, Pitchford once again defended exclusives, saying that “he’s happy to shop in different stores” and that “exclusives are fine when they come [with] advantages and when they are short – say, six months :)” The “six months” mentioned here is the exact duration Borderlands 3 will be tied to the Epic Games Store.


On April 2, Pitchford reminded his followers that 2K/Take Two makes the decisions regarding publishing, ultimately asking in a seemingly exasperated tone: “Do you not understand?”

Despite his above tweets, the Gearbox CEO has now said that he’ll do everything he can to release Borderlands 3 on Steam, so long as Valve announce the mythical Half-Life 3, a game that has inspired memes and become legend as a game that will probably never see the light of day, despite fans begging for it.

Yeah, I'll play it when I'm 100% sure some guy named Chen from China isn't trying to steal my banking info and/or buy my data. Imagine if Sony or MS was caught with spyware in their storefronts. You'd be just as worried if not more.

I was telling myself the samething bro dont get me wrong ive heard of half life but never ever have i played the game or even saw a clip of it


Borderlands 3 is probably funner than what half life 2 is now but when half life 2 released, no other game in its genre was really coming close to doing what it was doing.
It had great graphics, amazing physics which still hold up today, great story telling and sound design. All from a first person shooter. To go back and play it right now it probably wouldn't be that great and you wouldn't realize what it was doing, but at the time of its release it was something else.
It didn't really do anything new per say. Physics were in other games, graphics were good in other games, story telling was good in other games. What it did do, was do all of those things in 1 single game, and it did everything flawlessly.

He is saying he will get Borderlands 3 on Steam for purchase before the 6 months exclusitivity is up if Valve announce Half Life 3....he's not comparing the games or favouring one over the other.

Yes I too can pick parts of a tweet to backup my point, but unfortunately the whole article does not revolve around part of a tweet.

The main point of the article is that if Half Life 3 is announced he will try to get Borderland 3 on Steam earlier than the 6 month wait...Your original comment had nothing to do with the main point of this article. Its all a meme.

This comment doesn't make sense. How would they take an L and how is your opinion on which game is "better" better than lets say, his opinion? It's not a crime to really enjoy more than one game series.
