Modern Warfare 3 Could Break Black Ops Sales Records

On November 8, Activision will ship its latest Call of Duty entry, the Infinity Ward-Sledgehammer Games-developed Modern Warfare 3. That game has large shoes to fill, as its predecessor--Call of Duty: Black Ops--is the best-selling game of all time not only in the United States but also in the United Kingdom.


Modern Warfare 3 is going to be a big hit, says Pachter.
However, Black Ops is not untouchable, according to Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter. He believes Modern Warfare 3 could surpass sales of 20 million units, a figure he predicted Black Ops has sold to date in May. Officially, Black Ops has sold 13.7 million units in the United States. However, the shooter has likely sold many more copies than that, as it has graced the NPD's top 10 software list often since its arrival.

Pachter justified his belief that Modern Warfare 3 will break Black Ops' record "due primarily to the network effect created by the game's remarkable 17 million weekly active unique online players."

Pachter believes that Activision's introduction of Call of Duty: Elite--a stat-tracking and social application--could cause some Call of Duty fans to "defect" to Electronic Arts' Battlefield 3, which ships before Modern Warfare 3 on October 25. The beta for Call of Duty: Elite launches on Thursday.

Modern Warfare 3 outselling Black Ops is not a completely wild prediction. GameStop reported in June that preorder figures for Modern Warfare 3 are tracking ahead of Black Ops'. Additionally, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has previously stated his belief that each entry in the series will outpace the last.

shadow1 I really doubt that. From what the E3 trailers were showing, not many people are excited. And from what MW2 was like, im pretty sure not many people are still going ot buy it. Just because this game is the succeser of Cod 4, doesnt mean it will be good. Where i live, Black Ops still has over 200 more pre orders in all 3 of my game stops than MW3, the same with BF3.

Are you kidding me? MW2 is a 100 times better then Black Ops. MW2 is the second best COD and yes it did have some issues with noob tubes and death strikes. But it was a good game. I played MW2 all the way up until Black Ops. For Black Ops I was tired of it after 2 weeks.


Danger close, noob tubes, famas, deathstreaks, nuke, game breaking glitches,quick scoping so easy a baby could do it, mods, hacks, shitty dlc, barely any post launch updates, shitty community responses and this game was better than black ops? you people have to be **** kidding me
COD points, bad graphics, AK74u, flak jacket, FAMAS, worst unlock system of all time, laggy gameplay, terrible dlc,10x worse community responses than mw2, nerf shotguns, nerf sniper rifles, impossible to quickscope, completely automatic weapon oriented gameplay, terrible multiplayer maps, boring campaign, terrible gameplay compared to mw2 (which came out a year before it), and this game was better than mw2? you have to be kidding me

It has laggy kill cams. They don't match what actually happened in the game. Gun power is inconsistent. Graphics are horrible. World at War didn't set records because it was before MW2. Everyone was still playing COD4. Gayarch got lucky. They should thank Infinity Ward for there sales figures. Ray Charles was blind and even he could see that Black Ops has MAJOR issues. I will give Gayarch credit for there attempted repairs and updates to get rid of exploits. However, everyone knows it didn't stop the 15th prestige hacks, gold gun hack, 15th in combat training hack...the list goes on and on. Wake up people buy MW3 and Battlefield 3. Don't miss out on the epic duel of 2 rival companies. We the gamers will gain the most from all of this competition!!
yeah treyarch has been taking advantage of infinity ward's success since it started making cod. the treyarch games are all low points in the series
