Taking to the official subreddit for the upcoming first-person shooter, art director Joel Emslie confirmed that there is no plan for the game time receive “surprise mechanics” like loot boxes in the future.
“There continues to be misinformed and incorrect info being pushed about Modern Warfare,” Emslie posted. “What I can say right now is that we are definitely NOT working on any kind of supply drop or loot box system.”
Instead, like in prior CoD titles, gameplay items will be earned through traditional gameplay. However, Emslie’s phrasing does hint at a lot of optional items being hidden behind microtransactional paywalls.
“Functional stuff is unlocked through GAMEPLAY,” the developer said. “Stay tuned, we’re planning to release info this week.”
While the Call of Duty developer has tried to encourage fans that there will be no loot boxes, some remain wary. While the past entry, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, didn’t originally launch with loot boxes, they were added a few months after release.
“Please let this be true for the entire life cycle of the game,” says the top comment on the Reddit post. “I hope this doesn’t come back to bite them in the ass,” says another. Some users are asking Reddit bots to remind them of the post in a few months.
