The name of the new Xbox Series X has been a hot topic since its reveal at The Game Awards 2019. As soon as the name was announced, it was clear that the wording was divisive, with some welcoming it, while others finding it to be a perplexing choice. But it turns out the next-gen Microsoft console’s name is not a confusing as you might have thought.
According to Business Insider, a Microsoft representative told them the console that will be ushering in the next generation of gaming is just called “Xbox,” with “Series X” being the model name. “The name we’re carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox,” said the Microsoft rep. “And at The Game Awards, you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X.”
Additionally, the Microsoft rep told Business Insider, “the name ‘Xbox Series X’ allows room for additional consoles in the future.” Surprise! Microsoft is going to make more Xbox consoles. Essentially, Microsoft is rebranding its video game console to simply be called Xbox. It may seem like an odd decision at first, especially when its first console had the same exact name, but I feel this new naming convention is aligned with the direction Microsoft is taking its video game business.
Also, its previous names are pretty ridiculous when you take into account which order they release chronologically. The newest system is “Xbox One,” which is not the first, but the third console Microsoft has released. The first console is just called “Xbox,” with its sophomore release being the “Xbox 360….” I admit, I can see why someone who isn’t in tune with video games would be confused. Starting with a clean slate might be for the best.
The Xbox Series X is expected to launch Holiday 2020. Halo Infinite and Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga are just two of the games set to release for the upcoming console.
