Nintendo Switch smuggler caught with hundreds of game carts

4.4
A Nintendo Switch smuggler was caught with hundreds of game cartridges by Chinese authorities, although it’s a little different from the Nintendo Switch shortage that we’ve been experiencing in the West. The smuggled cartridges included Animal Crossing: New Horizons among many other titles.

Niko Partners Senior Analyst Daniel Ahmad reports that the smuggler was caught by Gongbei Port customs in Guangdong Province, China. He was coming into Mainland China via Macau and failed to declare that he was transporting these goods into the country.

Apparently, he isn’t the first Nintendo Switch smuggler either — so far, government authorities have seized a total of 2,000 game cartridges so far. This is the fourth such case in a month.

While the Nintendo Switch has indeed been released in China, the country has their own special version of the console with special releases. China has notoriously strict game regulations, so much so that the Chinese eShop has a fraction of the titles that are available in the West.

Trying to bring a few hundred game carts into the country without authorization is a big no-no. Gongbei customs reminded citizens that it’s illegal to bring large quantities of goods into the country without declaring it.

Gossip Surely smuggling video games cannot be that serious lmao.

They have pretty strict rules in China with games. There was another article about them banning animal crossing from being sold because of the online chat in the game. I had no idea any of that was even a thing until a few days ago.

When you're a strict country like China and you're trying to squash freedom of speech, any platform they can't 100% monitor goes out the window. Blame the people who were using the platform to spread their cause(Which I do support!!).

If they don't already, I imagine they'll do what South Korea does where you can only have an Online account if you link the game with your Social ID, in order to track and monitor what you do/say online. // Looking it up, it seems not every game requires this Online but enough games do where it's not un-ordinary and it's fairly normal.

It's pretty crazy the shit they have to go through. Makes me grateful to be in the US and to not have these strict laws about playing video games lol.

Good god imagine going down by smuggling switch games lmao. Wonder how much money he made off of what he was doing before getting caught. China had to benefit somewhat from him.
