While Sony and Microsoft have been playing a game of chicken for the past few months regarding when we’ll expect their next-gen systems to release and what their price would be, it seems like the game has finally ended. Given that both systems were bound to debut in November, it was only a matter of time before one of the two console makers budged to reveal the date and price for their system, and Microsoft is the one to have made the first move with the Xbox Series X.
Microsoft has finally let the console out of the bag and announced that the Xbox Series X will officially launch on November 10, 2020. Coming alongside the recently-confirmed Xbox Series S–a smaller, cheaper next-gen console at $299–the Series X will retail for $499 and will feature a financing option to pay for the system at $35/month for up to 24 months. Additionally, Microsoft has confirmed that pre-orders for the system will begin on September 22, 2020.
After this week’s leaks on the Xbox Series S, we now have a full picture for Microsoft’s plans to release its next-gen systems, and for the most part, the prices and release date are pretty close to what rumors and speculation have indicated for the Series X. The Series S, however, offers an interesting twist as a system with less powerful hardware specifications, but at a much cheaper price point. By comparison, we know that Sony is planning to offer two versions of the PS5–one with and without a disc drive–so it remains to be seen what the price different between both systems will be.
The Series X is officially launching on November 10, 2020 for $499.
