Sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are likely to hit 16 million units in the fourth quarter of the year, according to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, who believes Battlefield 3 will sell eight million copies globally during the same timeframe.

Pachter told Forbes that the two rival shooters should generate over $1.4 billion in revenue in the three month period, representing 15 percent of total packaged game sales.

He also thinks Modern Warfare 3 could sell an additional eight million copies in 2012 and Battlefield 3 another two million units, with many gamers choosing to pick up both games.

"I'd guess that around half of the console copies of Battlefield 3 will be bought by people who also buy Modern Warfare 3, so around two to three million will buy both," he said. "I don't see much cannibalization of the titles."
