Call of Duty Titles Have Year-Round Activity, No “Signs of Slowing” – Eric

Activision Publishing CEO, Eric Hirshberg, discusses the annual release philosophy as opposed to year round activity that the Call of Duty franchise is seeing.

“There’s a unique behavior for gamers related to that game [Call of Duty]… it has this incredibly long tail and people play it all year round and that has forced, or enabled, the company to change the way we look at it because, to our players, it’s not an annual retail release,” Hirshberg stated in a Games Industry interview.

“It’s a year-round activity. So, if you look at it like an annual retail release, by those standards, it’s easy to get nervous.” Then, he went on to liken the Call of Duty franchise to how the NFL operates. He stated, “but if you look at it through a different lens; if you look at it like, the NFL happens every year and people like it every year and they obsess over it every year and they come back for more every year and I think that it’s an entertainment relationship that’s pretty unique in the gaming space.”

On the subject of whether the franchise is inching closer to its peak, which the latest NPD numbers suggested and Hirshberg refuted, he noted, “let me also say that you can’t find a metric that would indicate that it’s fatiguing or that there are signs of slowing.” He continued, “the concurrency of players is higher than ever and not only that, it’s across several games. I think that the top three most played games on Xbox Live are the last three Call of Duty games.” The latest Call of Duty numbers suggested over 40 million active monthly users across all titles.

“It’s just not reflective of what our gamers clearly want. If you start from that place, of looking at what gamers want and what their behavior would suggest – they want more DLC, they want more new gameplay experiences. And so, we’re starting with that and building it out. We’re not starting with the conventional wisdom of the industry and going in,” Hirshberg added regarding how the industry paints annual releases in negative light.

you are dumb! The quality decreases? Ok, put in cod 4, then put in cod 8. Which looks better? Which one has better graphics? which one has more people playing? I would say it's pretty obvious that the quality increases!

Oh and if your old enough to be someones dad on here you need to get a life bud! With the majority of people on here being between the ages of 14-18, you must be 35+! Holy shiit get a life much?

Video games are not just for kids and teenagers I grew up with them all my life! So you better educate yourself before you troll people on the internet you little ****!
Also in my opinion! quality does go down! Graphics looks barely different and plus look at battlefield, those are good graphics. Also who cares if more people play it year after year, its mostly children who can't tell the difference between a good game and a broken game. It all just comes down to gameplay and they have done nothing but a few crappy features that either, piss people off or just so minor that no one cares. They need to make a big change or two before i buy another one. Thats my opinion.


QUOTECEPTION! I agree that CoD is milking it now, the CoD franchise has died in my eyes. It was a time killer and something fun to do with your friends. I can remember it's infant stages, when MoH was big, and CoD was for PC- now it's populated by millions of wasters and children, willing to pay subscriptions to CoD Elite, when other games offer identical services for free?

I sound like a troll but I'm really not feeling the CoD franchise anymore o.O

I dont know how anybody could possibly call MW3 a good game at all. Just look at it. The guns can one shot everybody like the pp-90 or type 95. There is a reason why alot of people call GOW, BF, Halo and other shooting games trash is because it is hard to get a kill. Until cod joins those ranks, i may just stop buying. I sold my mw3 along with 12 other people on my friends list because it was dukey. Hopefully lives up to their word like always and makes the next one memorable.
