Rumor: Next Xbox to have 16 cores in processor?

Is the next version of the Xbox game console from Microsoft going to have a CPU with a ton of cores inside? That's the claim from the UK-based print magazine Xbox World. Venture Beat reports that according to the print article, the next Xbox will have a processor based on IBM's PowerPC design that will have a whopping 16 cores inside. By comparison, the Xbox 360 only has three cores in its CPU.

The article also says that the next Xbox will have a GPU from AMD that will be based on the Radeon 7000 series graphics chip. This new rumor claims that development kits for the next Xbox have been sent to some game developers in March.

Unconfirmed reports claim that Microsoft might try to launch the next Xbox by the end of 2013. Sony is reportedly going to try to beat Microsoft to market with its follow-up to the Playstation 3, which one web site, Kotaku, claims has the code-name Orbis. The next Sony game console could have AMD making both the CPU and GPU. Finally, Nintendo has plans to release the Wii U by the end of 2012 but new, unconfirmed, claims have its graphics as powerful as the Xbox 360 or the PS3.

All I can say is sh*T.... 16 cores you only need a dual core to have HD graphics for almost any game on a PC.

Hopefully this doesn't mean the price will be around the 500 area like PS3 when it first came out.

MPAA 16 cores! Even a gaming PC doesn't need THAT many, I think this is one of those rumors that will prove false.

whoever writes these "articles" needs to limit these ridiculous rumors to once a month...16 cores would be completely unnecessary(6 cores would be plenty for a 7-8 year cycle).

Also, all these articles seem to be biased against Microsoft. Not sure if you know this but it costs a lot of money to run the Sony Entertainment Network and Sony just posted a multi-billion dollar loss and is cutting jobs...the next Playstation will most likely have a paid subscription service. Microsoft makes a ton of money and is more likely than Sony to make their online service free(still very unlikely).
