It's been four years since The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced during Bethesda's 2018 E3 conference. Although we didn't get much more than a confirmation that the sixth game was being made alongside a short CGI video showcasing unknown lands, it's been so long since the announcement that you'd be safe in assuming that the game was pretty far along.
That doesn't seem to be the case, according to the LinkedIn profile of a Bethesda employee. Timur222, who regularly analyses gaming sales figures and LinkedIn profiles of developers to see how far along some titles are, Tweeted an image from the LinkedIn Profile of Fanny Manset, talent acquisition and HR generalist at Bethesda.

Manset posted an update on her profile that says, "Bethesda Game Studios sets the benchmark for open-world gaming and is currently in full production on Starfield, its first new universe in 25 years, and in pre-production on the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls VI."
When The Elder Scrolls 6 was first announced back in 2018, it was said to be in pre-production, so it's interesting to note that Bethesda still considers the project to be in that same state. Although this may seem worrying, it's more likely that Bethesda wants to get Starfield's development complete before putting all of its energy into The Elder Scrolls 6.
Many assumed that when The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced, it was a very premature announcement that was made to combat the criticism levied towards Bethesda regarding Fallout 76. Since then, Bethesda has briefly shown some of the work going into making The Elder Scrolls 6, but it seems that it'll still be a few years before we see or hear anything concrete.
It's also not easy to gauge what "pre-production" even means until Bethesda shows off the game in more detail, so it's hard to guess when we'll next see or hear anything official about The Elder Scrolls 6.
