PlayStation is reportedly working on a new handheld console that will serve as a remote-play device for PlayStation 5, allowing players to pair the device with the console via the internet and play games on the go, according to a new report from InsiderGaming

The report suggests that the new device is codenamed Project Q-Lite and is targeting a release before the arrival of the rumored PlayStation 5 Pro. As the source claims, this remote-play device will bring an 8-inch touchscreen LCD paired with controllers on either side that support haptic feedback as well as adaptive triggers, similar to PlayStation 5's DualSense controllers.

Project Q-Lite is also said to support 1080p resolution and 60 FPS gaming. If the rumors are true, players can also expect a speaker as well as a headset/headphone input on the device.



Project Q-Lite will reportedly require a constant internet connection to allow users to play the games they have installed on their PlayStation 5. However, it remains unknown how the connectivity process would work, such as if users will be able to play games on the handheld device while their PlayStation 5 is off.

Previous reports from insiders suggested that PlayStation 5's new version was under development, and is currently targeting a release in Holiday 2024. If Insider Gaming's report is to be believed (which states the new handheld console will release before the PS5 Pro) this means an announcement for Project Q-Lite could be made either this year or possibly early 2024.

Sony recently launched PlayStation VR2 worldwide, but unofficial reports suggested that the new VR platform has not met the financial expectations of the Japanese giant. So, it remains unknown how the community will react to yet another device that requires a PlayStation 5 to operate.

Currently, there is no information on the price point of Project Q-Lite. But analysts suggest that Sony has once failed by setting a high price on its PlayStation VR2. Regarding the fact that Steam Deck is currently one of the highly popular handheld gaming platforms around the world that offers access to multiplatform titles as well as Microsoft exclusives, Sony's Project Q-Lite will probably need to adjust its price in a way to challenge the Steam Deck.
