Rare Pikachu Pokemon Card Sells For $300,000

Collectors recently exchanged an extremely rare Pokemon card, officially known as the Trophy Pikachu No. 3 Trainer Bronze Professional Sports Authenticator Trading Card Game NM-MT 8 (Media Factory, 1997) First Tournament Holo, for an impressive $300,000 during an event held by Heritage Auctions. The card which was only offered to participants who finished at least third at the First Official Pocket Monsters Tournament in Chiba, Japan back in 1997 is one of just four copies to have been certified by the Professional Sports Authenticator.

“The historical importance of this card had us confident it would do well, but the result exceeded everyone’s expectations,” Heritage Trading Card Games Consignment Director Jesus Garcia explained about the stunning sale. “This card was not in the booster boxes that were offered at the time. It only was available to trainers who finished third at the First Official Pocket Monsters Tournament in Chiba, Japan in 1997. It is an extraordinarily rare card, now standing as a centerpiece in the winning bidder’s collection.”

The auction in question featured a variety of highly coveted Pokemon items including a Pokemon Unlimited Base Set Test Print Uncut Sheet Cosmos Foil which sold for more than eight times its previously estimated value, going for no less than $250,000. The sheet features a total of more than 100 individual cards. The Pokemon First Edition Base Set Sealed Booster Box also drew several dozen bids before selling for $237,500. The set contains cards including Blastoise, Venusaur, Mewtwo, and Charizard.

In addition to Pokemon, the auction also featured some very rare Magic: The Gathering cards. Someone for example scooped up a Magic: The Gathering Limited Edition Beta Sealed Starter Deck for the stately sum of $32,500. The deck is recognizable on account of its barcode at the bottom and lack of the term Unlimited Edition on the front. The cards contained in the set could include Black Lotus, Timetwister, and Mox.

The auction drew attention from collectors worldwide and the prices fetched by these and other exceedingly rare items highlight the continued demand for Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering cards. The event was ultimately a smashing success, with sales bringing in a total of almost $2,500,000. The demand for such classic cards currently shows no signs of slowing down and with more auctions planned for the near future, collectors are sure to continue snapping up these valuable items.
