Nintendo has announced a remake of Mario vs Donkey Kong.

The game was originally released on Game Boy Advance in 2004, and is a 2D platformer with puzzle elements.

According to Nintendo, the game is an “updated version” of the original and will include new features such as co-op play.

It’s set for release on Switch on February 16.

“The rivalry that heated up on the Game Boy Advance system reignites on Nintendo Switch,” Nintendo’s description of the remake reads.

“Donkey Kong has stolen the Mini-Mario toys, and Mario is determined to track him down and get them back! Use your brain and brawn to make it through a barrel of increasingly challenging levels – and in this updated version of the game, you can even play with a friend in local co-op.

“Grab keys and navigate perilous platforms with handstand jumps and backflips and lead the Mini-Mario toys to safety. Then, prepare to face Donkey Kong head on.”

Mario vs Donkey Kong was the spiritual successor to the 1994 Game Boy version of Donkey Kong, in which Mario could perform new moves.

The game would eventually spawn a further six Mario vs Donkey Kong titles, but the rest were mainly puzzle titles, some of which played similarly to Lemmings.

As such, the original Mario vs Donkey Kong plays more like a platformer than any of its successors.

The last game in the series, Mini Mario & Friends: Amiibo Challenge, was a Wii U and 3DS eShop exclusive, meaning it’s no longer available.
