PlayStation 3 reportedly passes Xbox 360 in worldwide sales

Despite having almost a year long head start on Sony, new research reports have the PlayStation 3 finally taking the lead in the number of consoles shipped worldwide in comparison to the Xbox 360.

According to a Worldwide Video Game Entertainment Console Hardware and Packaged Software 2012-2016 Forecast from the International Data Corporation, which is said to also include the number from December, that show PlayStation creator Sony has finally passed Microsoft in worldwide sales last month (roughly 77 million to 76 million).

While this report does show Sony taking the lead, it is also clear to point out that these numbers are shipped totals and not actually sold to the consumers. Numerous analysts over the years have predicted that Sony would catch Microsoft, so it looks like they might have been right after all.

The forecast also gives mention to Nintendo's future, stating that the company will continue to find sales for their Wii U and projects that they will ship 50 million consoles by 2016.

By that do you mean ps3 is better for watching movies because of blue ray?


I'm guessing thats it, that's the only thing I can see that is better.

gtapro151 people finally wake up to relize if you want quality hardware that dosent break down microsoft is just not the way to go lol now that ps3 is affordable its over...


Quality Hardware? Good one.


When you say quality hardware, the only thing that is better is graphic the rest is ballocks compared to the xbox slim, and to be honest id rather have secure bank details, good servers and if xbox does go down its down for 4 hours at most, and if i recall ps3 was down for 2 weeks about and to be honest when the new xbox and ps4 get released i think there graphics will be the same if not better. And its all over, Ps3 has shipped more consoles, they don't know if they have suppressed the sales.

Liquidvlade Doesn't surprise me. PlayStation 3 is region free and has a few other good features (Blu-Ray/free online) which is one of the strong reasons that it is popular around the world.

Personally I own all 3 current gen consoles and personally I prefer the Xbox 360. Solid online experience, timed exclusive DLC for the bigger games and quite a few titles run better on the Xbox than the PS3.

To each their own though, it's all personal preference.


I've always considered the PS3 better for more of a family console, and the xbox for online play/actual gaming.
