Xbox Live voice chat to be replaced by Skype

4.2
Microsoft will now be putting Skype at the center of their online-capable communication devices.

A person who is familiar with this matter has said that Microsoft will be "consolidating all their communications technology" to be focused around the Skype platform. This means that Skype, which we are almost all familiar with, will now become the standard chat service on the next generation Xbox platform, as well as on the PC and tables.

This person also said, "You might jump to the conclusion that we'll see asynchronous voice and video messages in next-gen Xbox Live."

Microsoft made it's largest acquisition in it's forty year history in 2011 when it purchased Skype for $8.5 billion. Skype's former Chief Executive Tony Bates is now heading up the new Skype division within Microsoft.

In November 2011, Microsoft announced plans to close its instant message chat service MSN, which we now know is closing down for good on March 15, 2013, will be replaced by Skype's messaging tool.

Microsoft has recent posted a job advertisement which they were seeking a user interface designer for their "next generation Xbox".

"The team you'll join is responsible for Skype in the living room (broadly the home), across various devices but with the focus on the large screen and the next generation Xbox," said the job advertisement.

Pin I think this is great news! Especially if it will enable us to chat with people on PC Skype. :)

This would be the coolest thing ever... I think it's really the only logical reason Micro$oft would be doing this... But who knows...

Another reason this would be good is cost. For once, Microsoft aren't trying to rake in the money. Skype (PC) is free for group voice calling. Remember that at the moment, you need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to access Party Chats. I highly doubt they'll make Skype a 'Gold only' feature.

So not only can you talk to PC people, you'll be able to talk to silver friends. :)

It will be no different to the current chat. You won't miss anything. The only difference will be the name being 'Skype', and the addition of new features that you don't have to use if you don't want to.

KittyRa1n There is absolutely nothing wrong with the current chat, why change it?

I'm not sure about this. I don't see anything wrong with the way things are now.

I myself like the idea, wouldn't be a bad addition.
